About Siena College

Siena College is a an independent Roman Catholic liberal arts college in Loudonville, which is a hamlet in the town of Colonie, in Albany County, in the US state of New York. It was a census designated place in 1970, 1980 and 1990, but it ceased to be in the 2000 census. Colonie is the most populous suburb of Albany, NY, having more than 79 000 people, living within its limits, and it contains 2 villages: one also known as Colonie and the other one called Menands.

Siena College was founded in 1937, by the Franciscan Friars, and it was named after St. Bernardino of Siena, the illustrious 15th century Franciscan scholar and friar. It is a 4-year four-year, coeducational, independent college, which offers students undergraduate degrees in business, liberal arts, and sciences. Siena’s college covers 174 acres of land, at the northern edge of Loudonville, the main college building being the Siena Hall, its top cupola being used as the symbol of the college, appearing on the college logo and its most printed web material.

The College’s athletic teams are known as the Siena Saints, who compete in 18 NCAA Division I sports, 17 of which participate in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), in field hockey, the Saints competing in the Northeast Conference (NEC). Until the college was elevated to the Division I level, in 1976, it has only generally competed against local schools, after being moved to the NCAA, many of its athletic teams experiencing success, in many of their sports, including in men’s baseball, in which they advanced to the 1999 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, representing one of their recent high achievement.

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Jack Cashill - American author and journalist, Timothy Arthur Christman - Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher for the Colorado Rockies, Michael C. Finnegan - managing director of investment banking for JPMorgan Chase, Kathleen M. Jimino - county executive of Rensselaer County, New York, and William Joseph Kennedy American writer and journalist, also wrote The Ink Truck (1969), Legs (1975), Billy Phelan's Greatest Game (1978), Ironweed (1983, winner of 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction; film, 1987), and Roscoe (2002).
